Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,613 km² (1,009 mi²). 2,599 km² (1,003 mi²) of it is land and 15 km² (6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.57% water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 11,508 people, 4,506 households, and 3,266 families residing in the county. The population density is 4/km² (12/mi²). There are 5,452 housing units at an average density of 2/km² (5/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 92.31% White, 0.43% Black or African American, 2.97% Native American, 0.26% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 2.18% from other races, and 1.82% from two or more races. 4.48% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 4,506 households out of which 33.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.00% are married couples living together, 8.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.50% are non-families. 25.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.50 and the average family size is 3.00.

In the county, the population is spread out with 26.30% under the age of 18, 7.60% from 18 to 24, 25.20% from 25 to 44, 22.20% from 45 to 64, and 18.80% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 93.90 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.20 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $29,563, and the median income for a family is $35,598. Males have a median income of $25,668 versus $17,741 for females. The per capita income for the county is $15,528. 15.50% of the population and 13.10% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 22.10% of those under the age of 18 and 9.30% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
