Sullivan's Island is a town located in Charleston County, South Carolina. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,911.

Geography

Sullivan's Island is located at 32°45'48" North, 79°50'16" West (32.763456, -79.837911)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 8.6 km² (3.3 mi²). 6.3 km² (2.4 mi²) of it is land and 2.3 km² (0.9 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 27.11% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 1,911 people, 797 households, and 483 families residing in the town. The population density is 303.6/km² (787.2/mi²). There are 1,045 housing units at an average density of 166.0/km² (430.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 98.74% White, 0.63% African American, 0.05% Native American, 0.16% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.42% from two or more races. 0.84% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 797 households out of which 29.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.9% are married couples living together, 7.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 39.3% are non-families. 29.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.40 and the average family size is 3.01.

In the town the population is spread out with 24.0% under the age of 18, 5.0% from 18 to 24, 29.0% from 25 to 44, 31.0% from 45 to 64, and 10.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 100.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 97.7 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $72,955, and the median income for a family is $96,455. Males have a median income of $58,571 versus $41,029 for females. The per capita income for the town is $49,427. 4.2% of the population and 1.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 2.2% of those under the age of 18 and 0.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

History

On 28 June 1776 Fort_Moultrie, on the island's south-western shore, withstood British bombardment.

Edgar Allen Poe was stationed in from 1827 to 1828. The island was the setting of his short story The Gold Bug.

The Sullivan's Island lighthouse was built in 1962. The 140-foot-tall building boasts an elevator instead of the typical spiral staircase.
